Issues under negotiation

چکیده
In this paper, we give an issue-based account of a simple kind of collaborative negotiative dialogue. We start from a previous formal account of negotiative dialogue (Sidner, 1994a) and argue for a slightly different idea of what negotiative dialogue is. We want to make a distinction between the process of accepting an utterance and its content, which applies to all utterances, and a concept of negotiation defined, roughly, as a discussion of several alternative solutions to some problem. This latter account is formulated in terms of Issues Under Negotiation (IUN), representing the question or problem to be resolved, and a set of alternative answers, representing the proposed solutions. We argue that this theory improves on certain aspects of Sidner’s account while also fitting into a question-based dialogue management framework which has previously been implemented in the GoDiS dialogue system (Bohlin et al., 1999). Work on this paper was supported by SIRIDUS (Specification, Interaction and Reconfiguration in Dialogue Understanding Systems), EC Project IST-199910516, and D’Homme (Dialogues in the Home Machine Environment), EC Project IST-2000-26280, and STINT (The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education). An extended presentation of this work appears in (Larsson, 2002). First, we will give a brief review of Sidner’s theory and discuss its merits and drawbacks. We then provide an alternative account based on the concept of Issues Under Negotiation. We explain how IUN can be added to GoDiS, and give an information state analysis of a simple negotiative dialogue. Finally, we draw some conclusions and point to possible future research areas.

Multi-agent Negotiation under Time Constraints on an Agent-based Marketplace for Personnel Acquisition
A model for multi-agent negotiation under time constraints on an agent-based marketplace for personnel acquisition is presented. In the situation under consideration agents have contradictory aims and multi-lateral negotiation is chosen as the most suitable form for agents’ co-ordination. Negotiation issues and negotiation strategies are discussed first. Then the general case of multi-lateral n...
متن کاملOn the e-Negotiation of Unmatched Logrolling Views
An e-Negotiation process comprises computerfacilitated tasks, each of which aims at resolving an issue or a collection of co-related issues under negotiation. It involves an iterative decision process in which two or more parties make individual decisions and interact with each other, aiming to arrive at a contract. In each iterative decision process, a party makes offers or counter offers that...
متن کاملNegotiation in multi-agent systems
In systems composed of multiple autonomous agents, negotiation is a key form of interaction that enables groups of agents to arrive at a mutual agreement regarding some belief, goal or plan, for example. Particularly because the agents are autonomous and cannot be assumed to be benevolent, agents must influence others to convince them to act in certain ways, and negotiation is thus critical for...
متن کاملStudent Paper: Multi-Linked Negotiation in Multi-Agent System
Multi-linked negotiation describes a situation where one agent needs to negotiate with multiple agents about different issues, and the negotiation over one issue influences the negotiations over other issues. Multi-linked issues will become important for the next generation of more complicated Multi-Agent Systems. However, most current negotiation research looks only at single issue negotiation...
متن کاملTransfer of Bargaining Power Sources in Oil Trade Games
Bargaining Power is one of the important issues in oil trade negotiations. In this paper two effective factors in bargaining power i.e. patient time to deal and outside options of each player have been considered. The necessary relations for exchange of sources in negotiation have been derived.
متن کاملOn efficient mediation approach to multi-issue negotiation with optimal and fair outcomes
Empirical evidence suggests that self-interested agents often fail to reach optimal agreements in multi-issue negotiations. Most existing negotiation approaches either do not address fairness issues; or do not consider computational concerns. To address these problems, the aim of this research is to investigate negotiation techniques, introducing efficient mediation approaches to support multi-...
